Introduction to Media Literacy

What is Media Literacy?

Media literacy involves the skill of critically evaluating messages, symbols, and signs across different media formats. Rather than being an additional subject in an already packed curriculum, it serves as an educational method that fosters a habit of inquiry. This approach is adaptable to any classroom and independent of specific content areas.

It enables individuals to:

  • Decode media messages.

  • Assess their influence on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

  • Create and share media responsibly.

The Importance of Media Literacy in the Digital Age:

  • Encourages individuals to question sources and assess biases.

  • Helps people make smarter choices about what they consume and share.

  • Promotes ethical content creation and sharing.

  • Reduces susceptibility to misinformation and stereotypes.

  • Encourages healthy consumption of media for mental well-being.

  • Promotes digital safety and ethical online interactions.

Group Discussion

  1. Discussion Prompt:

    • “Reflect on a time when media influenced your beliefs or actions. How did it shape your perception?”

  2. Quick Group Exercise:

    • Analyze a recent advertisement and identify its emotional, aesthetic, and moral dimensions using the framework:

      • Cognitive: What is being conveyed?

      • Emotional: What feelings are evoked?

      • Aesthetic: How are visuals/audio used?

Moral: What values are being communicated?
